چکیده

Background: Anesthetists should measure the concentration of supplemental oxygen to determine whether patients’ partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2) is correct during general anesthesia. However, the standard PaO2 value in obese patients in the supine position is unknown. We evaluated the PaO2 with respect to the Broca-Katsura obesity index. Materials and Methods: From January 2001 to December 2013, we evaluated 472 patients aged ≥16 years old that underwent general anesthesia in the supine position. The anesthetic charts of 472 patients with an American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status of I or II were retrospectively reviewed to investigate the PaO2. Results: In patients aged 16 to <65 years old, the PaO2 was 165.7 ± 25.6 mmHg at a Broca-Katsura index of <20%, 141.8 ± 26.9 mmHg at a Broca-Katsura index of 20% to <40%, 132.7 ± 22.7 mmHg at a Broca-Katsura index of 40% to <60%, and 111.7 ± 34.6 mmHg at a Broca-Katsura index of ≥60%. In patients aged 65 to <84 years old, the PaO2 was 152.1 ± 23.8 mmHg at a Broca-Katsura index of <20%, 130.6 ± 26.7 mmHg at a Broca-Katsura index of 20% to <40%, and 127.5 ± 11.3 mmHg at a Broca-Katsura index of 40% to <60%. Conclusion: With an increasing Broca-Katsura index, the PaO2 tended to decrease with age from 16 to <65 years old and 65 to <84 years old. Additionally, the PaO2 tended to decrease with age from 16 to <65 years at a BrocaKatsura index of 20% to <40%.

THE EFFECT OF CHANGE IN POSITION ON INTRATRACHEAL CUFF PRESSURE IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING SURGERY WITH GENERAL ANESTHESIA: A PROSPECTIVE ANALYTICAL STUDY

Background & Aims: Tracheal intubation with a cuffed tube for the administration of general anesthesia is routine. The cuff of the endotracheal tube is inflated with air to achieve an adequate seal to prevent aspiration and leakage of air and anesthetic gases. Whereas over-inflation can decrease the mucosal perfusion, leading to pressure necrosis and nerve palsies. This study aimed to evaluate ...

Comparison of Extubation of Patients in Prone versus Supine Position in workers Undergoing Lumbar Disc Surgery

Introduction: This study compared the extubation of patients in prone versus supine positions in patients undergoing lumbar disc surgery. Methods: In this single-blind clinical trial, 60 patients who were candidates for elective lumbar disc surgery were selected and randomly assigned into two groups of 30 patients. All patients primarily underwent surgery in the prone position. After surgery a...

Effects of prone position on lung function of patients undergoing mechanical ventilation under total intravenous anesthesia

Lung function of patients is one of the most important issues for anesthesiologists during the perioperative period. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of prone position on lung function of patients undergoing mechanical ventilation under total intravenous anesthesia. Sixty patients undergoing elective surgery were randomly divided into 2 groups: supine group (receiving operation in supin...

Evaluation of Pressure of Arterial Oxygen by Age in Supine Position during General Anesthesia

Background: The concentration of supplemental O2 should be measured during general anesthesia to determine whether patients’ pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2) is correct. Nevertheless, we do not know standard value of PaO2 by age in supine position during general anesthesia. In this study, we evaluated the PaO2 by age at 33% or 40% O2 concentration. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively re...

Comparison of direct and indirect blood pressure in patients under esophagectomy surgery: a prospective observational study

Background: Arterial pressure is one of the most important physiological variables and often needs to be monitored repeatedly or continuously in perioperative period. Arterial pressure monitoring is one of the standard monitoring in operating room. During general anesthesia, blood pressure can be measured by using a noninvasive arterial pressure method or continuous invasive arterial pressure b...
